Anyone who’s stepped out of Sydney city and into the great outdoors lately will have seen the crowds flock around Kur-in-gai National Park. Here people are either volunteering themselves (and their 3 closest buddies) to complete the Oxfam 100km hike or among who are just keen to get out of the hustle and bustle. And these days I’ve been hitting the National Park’s like they’re going out of style preparing for multiple upcoming trips. Read on for my best day treks near Sydney!
Yep, I can be seen scaling boulders, ambulating from river to river and debouching onto open plains with the rest of em. Not only have I learn how to ‘pitch’ a tent, ‘stoke’ a fire and ‘dig’ my own rest room I’ve certainly got a taste for adventure and wilderness.
Not only was I will filled with a sense of adventure, even the most fastidious of us enjoyed what these treks have on offer. They’re all clearly marked (no room for mapping error) and do have frequent rest rooms (for our most precious of peeps).

Berowra to Cowan (via Berowra waters with optional overnight stay) – Part of the Great North Walk
- How long is it: 13 kms approx..
- Time / How long does it take: 6 hours approx..
- How do I get there: There are train stations at either end along the Newcastle Service Line.
- Difficulty: I’d say pretty hard!
We camped overnight along Berowra waters, there is a designated area along the trek you can pitch a tent (note: there are no running water, BBQ or toilet facilities here)
Cowan to Jeruselum Bay – Part of the Great North Walk
- How long is it: 2.5 kms (each direction) approx..
- Time / How long does it take: 1 hours (each direction) approx..
- How do I get there: Use the Cowan train station
- Difficulty: Not too bad, moderate to hard.
We did this on our second day of hiking, so I’m not sure whether it was more challenging because we were tired or because of its actually degree of difficulty.
Royal National Park Coast Track (with optional overnight stay at Era Beach)
- How long is it: 28 kms approx..
- Time / How long does it take: 7-10 hours approx. Depends if/how you wish to break it up.

I’d recommend staying the night so you’re not too rushed. There are plenty of places along the way to stop and take a dip.
